Hot, loud fan, switching off

Laptop overheating or shutting down?

A laptop that runs hot, has a loud fan or switches itself off is usually clogged with dust, with old thermal paste that has dried out. Left alone, the heat slowly damages the motherboard. We open it, clean the fan and heatsink, put on fresh thermal paste and check the board.

What we do

Fan and heatsink clean

Dust and lint are cleared from the fan and the cooling fins.

New thermal paste

Dried paste between the chip and the heatsink is replaced so heat moves away again.

Fan check

A noisy or weak fan is checked and replaced if it is failing.

Board check

If it still shuts down, we test the board for faults that cause it.

Why it matters

  • Heat is one of the main reasons motherboards fail. A clean now is far cheaper than a board repair later.
  • A free estimate first, and nothing is done without your OK.
  • In Juja and Kenya's heat, laptops used on beds and laps clog up quickly.

Questions about laptop overheating

How often should a laptop be cleaned inside?

If it runs hot or the fan gets loud, it is time. Laptops used on beds, pillows or dusty desks need it more often.

What can I do myself?

Use it on a hard flat surface, blow the dust out of the vents with it switched off, and close programs you are not using. Our self-help page has the steps.
